Swimming is an effective workout for the body. When compared to running, the New York Times states runners travel more than three times farther than swimmers in the same amount of time. Yet, the number of calories burned from both exercises appeared to be the same. The distance is simply different. Runners have to run farther to get the same workout in a shorter distance in the pool.
